By the end of my visit, I saw every age, gender and race represented in the crowd. Outside, Ken (who’s not there, but he’s left a bunch of his stuff behind) is grilling some plastic chicken and steak on his fake barbecue. A human-sized barbecue is also tucked into the pink outdoor oasis, which is less decorated than the open-air bedroom right beside the patio. “Birth” premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September 2004. Reviews were mixed and when the movie opened the following month, audiences mostly stayed away. On the eve of Saturday’s AFI Life Achievement Award gala celebrating Kidman’s career, it felt like the right time to revisit “Birth,” a movie that has been reassessed in the 20 years since its release, emblematic of the risks she loves to take with her work.

The infinity pool flows out, rolling over the hills, and—if you squint—it appears to be part of the ocean. Those “KEN” balloons spotted in Airbnb’s original listing were gone by the time I visited, but a mass of floaties tumbled around in the water instead. A pink slide spirals into the pool, but it comes just short of the actual water. If you were to slide down, you’d land on your butt; in the movie, Barbie floats down and walks on top of the water. The 10,000-square-foot "Barbie The Dreamhouse Experience" building has opened at Sawgrass Mills mall in Sunrise, Fla., beckoning to kids and adult Barbie collectors alike with a giant closet, bedroom, kitchen and more, all covered in Barbie’s signature pink.
Inside the Barbie Dreamhouse, a Fuchsia Fantasy Inspired by Palm Springs
There are only two in the world — the other opens this week in Berlin, Germany. "It's nostalgic and reminds us of our childhood. We're all in our last year of our 20s and Barbie was such a huge thing," one girl explained. "And she still is... she's evolved a lot with the times." One of the main theme's in the exhibit was all about dreaming big. "Barbie You Can Be Anything" has been one of Mattel's big collections in recent years so many of the interactive experiences played into that. My daughter left wanting to be an astronaut, musician and scientist.

The space featured Barbie dolls and accessories from the past six decades, which also served as a reminder that the brand really has come a long way. While I certainly had some flashbacks from childhood, it was pretty special to watch my daughter live out her current dream. Next, we moved into a room with a big Barbie camper and watching the joy on my little girl's face certainly brought out all the feels. She made herself right at home — as she should since we play Barbie hours upon hours every week.
"I think we're all here because we appreciate Barbie's legacy. She's timeless," one visitor shared.
Her reinvented DreamHouse, which retails for $179, has three stories, eight rooms, an outdoor area, a rooftop pool and slide, a working elevator, and a garage. The first floor features a dining room and a kitchen with modern appliances; the second floor includes a bathroom and a living room, while the third floor showcases a master bedroom with a dream closet and a den that transforms into an office. Other highlights include a patio, fire pit, and garden. The series is set in a fictional version of Malibu, California, where all of its inhabitants are dolls. The dolls behave like humans, though a number of the show's gags rely on their doll-like nature.
Lift and lower Barbie® doll and her friends in the working elevator, fill the pool with water to make a splash, soak up some sun on the third-floor balcony and rooftop deck, and host a pet playdate with a puppy pool and slide. -- feature realistic touches and textures that bring any Barbie® story to life. With cool customizations and so many storytelling opportunities, kids ages 3 years old and up will move right into the Barbie® Dreamhouse® and make it their own! In order to find the square footage, we multiplied the width (40 inches) of the DreamHouse by the depth (15.5 inches) and got 620 square inches. We then multiplied that by three (the number of stories) to obtain a total of 1,860 square inches. Next, we divided by 144 square inches (one square foot equals 144 square inches) to get the total square footage of 13 square feet.
I Toured Barbie’s (and Ken’s) Real-Life Malibu DreamHouse
If you can manage a drive by of the area, the house will be hard to miss as it has a massive pink handle labeled with the classic Barbie 'B' sticking out of the roof and larger-than-life pink flamingo statues lining the path to the front door. One lucky Barbie superfan will even get the chance the stay in the Barbie Dreamhouse, which will depend on which design duo wins the competition. After catching our first glimpse at HGTV's real-life Barbie Dreamhouse, we're all wondering where in the world is this house? From the 60s inspired Barbie kitchen to the Ken's Den inspired by the 70s Barbie era, this house is a sight to see from top to bottom including the exterior.
Barbie's Dreamhouse
When young imaginations open the door to the Barbie® Dreamhouse®, they'll discover unlimited storytelling possibilities! Standing 43 inches tall and 41 inches wide, this dreamy dollhouse inspires 360-degree play with three floors and 10 indoor and outdoor living areas. Move right in and customize the space -- the grass area and pool can be placed in multiple configurations on the first and third floors, and the slide fits in four second-floor locations. After designing the layout, set the scene for any story with three songs, two soundscapes and customizable light settings! Then, double the fun with transforming furniture -- the BBQ grill reverses to reveal a dessert buffet, the entertainment center reverses to reveal a pet play area, and a bunk bed folds down from the wall. Kids can play out any story, from an ordinary day to the ultimate get-together with a kitchen, living room, dining room, bedroom, bathroom, pool, balcony, party room and more.
The series centers on the life of Barbie, her friends, her siblings, her boyfriend Ken, and a number of pets. The series is stylized as a mock reality show featuring confessionals of the characters in between scenes. The show heavily relies on slapstick humor, and makes a lot of satirical and self-parody references to the Barbie doll line. Inside the bedroom—which only has one free-standing door, a saloon-esque entryway painted with horses—Ken has really let his western flag fly. Cowboy hats sit in a crown above the still-Barbie pink velvet bed, though a new cow-print duvet rests upon the mattress.

I wish I’d invited some friends to throw on the Barbie soundtrack (or some horse noises?) and dance the night away. The building includes rooms filled with Barbie dolls along the walls, a staff on hand that will glam up visitors, Barbie-style, and several interactive features. McGuirk enlightened us on what it would cost to build Barbie’s DreamHouse in New England, imagining an East Coast move for the 61-year-old icon. In her experience, local builders charge from $250 up to high-end at $650 per square foot, shares McGuirk. Based on how many bells and whistles Barbie adds or deletes, her East Coast, 78-square-foot DreamHouse will cost anywhere between $19,500 and $50,700 to build. McGuirk just listed a 10,000-square-foot lot in a suburb of Boston for $250,000, which would accommodate a lot of Barbie DreamHouses.
Margot Robbie was recently spotted toting SteamLine Luggage’s retro carry-on suitcase ($550) and hat box in very on-brand powder pink while promoting Barbie in her native Australia. The brand also makes a cameo in the real-life Barbie DreamHouse, where the hat box can be spotted in Ken’s closet. The real-life Barbie DreamHouse is reopening its doors in Malibu soon — but this time, the three-story Airbnb promises big Kenergy. The seaside property with panoramic views first went up for rent in 2019, and Ken has redecorated the bright pink pad ahead of Greta Gerwig’s highly-anticipated Barbie film. Studios lot outside London, Barbie’s cinematic home reinterprets Neutra’s work as a three-story fuchsia fantasy, with a slide that coils into a kidney-shaped pool.
Kodak’s Printomatic digital camera — in chic Barbie-inspired pink — instantly prints out your memories on ink-free Zink photo paper. Join blond icon Barbie and her fabulous friends as their behind-the-scenes adventures are revealed in this animated Web series.
Imagine kicking up your feet in the DreamHouse’s couch when you light up Homesick’s official candle, which boasts base notes of sandalwood and plush velvet, mid notes of lemon zest and pink jasmine and top notes of sweet peony and rose bush. Airbnb will celebrate the film with a donation to Save the Children to support equal access to learning resources for children, families and communities in over 100 countries. The funds will help “to build girls’ confidence and help them excel in school – ensuring everyone has equal opportunity to achieve success,” per a release. Glazer did just that, noting that the making of “Birth” was fraught. The studio, he says, was “enraged by my daily script changes and improvisations,” often made because the scenes they had initially written were beyond the abilities of the young actor, Cameron Bright, playing the boy.
Since at 11.5 inches, Barbie measures about 1/6 the height of an average person, we multiplied 13 by 6 to arrive at 78 square feet as our final estimate as to the size of a real-life DreamHouse. As such, there are not only all of the mod-cons you might expect from a Barbie Dreamhouse—an infinity pool, a bar, a home gym with ocean views, and enough pink to put Pepto-Bismol out of business—but a few of Ken’s touches, too. Notably, you can “feel the Kenergy” by trying out the skates and surfboards he might have left around the house. You can channel your inner cowboy with a line dance on the light-up disco dance floor, or simply laze by the pool and top up your Ken-worthy tan. For the truly committed, you can even dress up like Ken, thanks to a fully-stocked closet bursting with beach-ready looks.
Dreams will come true for up to four people on Monday, July 17 starting at 10 a.m. PT, when reservations open up for the Malibu DreamHouse on Airbnb.com. Up for grabs are two free one-night stays for up to two people each night on July 21 and 22. Only a few lucky Barbie superfans will get to snooze at the pink-powered seaside property, but these cool Barbiecore finds let you recreate the whimsical experience at home. A possible challenge for Mattel, the company that owns the Barbie brand, could be convincing visitors to return and generate repeat business.
"I think people are loving it because you capture that feeling of childhood. That's why some people are here," a staff member in charge of the area told me. "Barbie is nostalgic." On July 17 for two one-night stays for up to two guests on July 21 and July 22. Details on how to book a stay are available from Airbnb here.
